When to go

For walking the 3.6 km2 sandbar and riding up to the viewpoints, pick April to June or October and November. Average highs in those months run from 16.6 °C to 25.9 °C1.

The coast around Miyazu in northern Kyoto Prefecture3 has hot, humid summers and relatively cold winters with occasional snowfall4. The averages on this page are the Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991–20201 normals for Miyazu.

Amanohashidate weather through the year
  • Mild, fewer wet days April to June, October to November
  • Hot, wet or chilly March, July to September, December
  • Snowiest, chairlift cut back January to February

Over a year, Miyazu averages 14.8 °C and 1,917.8 mm1 of rain, so an umbrella earns its place in your bag whatever the month. These are long-term averages, not a forecast: check the forecast the day before, because the boats and lifts react to wind and waves (see the closures below).

Fireworks night on Miyazu Bay

August’s big night is the Miyazu Toro Nagashi Fireworks Festival, held every year on 16 August8.

  • When: the 2026 festival ran 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM15.
  • Where: Shimazaki Park and around Miyazu Bay15.
  • What you see: about 10,000 red and white lanterns on the bay at sunset, then about 2,00015 to 3,00016 fireworks.
  • Crowds: about 75,000 people came when it returned in 202316.

The show ends late, so staying the night is the easy option: compare Amanohashidate hotels well before the date.

Closures and shorter winter hours

Bad weather and scheduled inspection days both stop services here. Winter also shortens lift hours.
