Castle town on the bay

Where Miyazu sits on the bay

Faces Wakasa Bay, Sea of Japan1

Miyazu is a city in Kyoto Prefecture facing Wakasa Bay of the Sea of Japan1 to the east. In the Edo period it was a castle town, ruled by a branch of the Matsudaira clan1.

The tourism association groups the area’s sights by hub, which makes planning easier:

  • The town centre, around Miyazu Station4: covered on this page.
  • Monju, around Amanohashidate Station4: one stop5 up the line.
  • Fuchu, around Kasamatsu Park4: linked to Monju by sightseeing boat in 12 minutes6.

The same official pages also cover Yosano and Ine4.

Miyazu Catholic Church is considered the oldest existing church in Japan that holds weekly Mass, predated only by Oura Church in Nagasaki8. Before you go, read up on the church’s open days and house rules.

The roadside station (Michi-no-Eki) is the practical stop in town:

  • Magokoro-ichi, a direct-sales market9 with farmers’ vegetables and rice, local seafood products and souvenirs
  • a tourist information centre9 covering the whole Kyoto by the Sea area
  • Minato Shokudo Shiosai9, a restaurant cooking fish landed nearby
  • standard rental bikes10 for the ride out to the sandbar

For more, see the roadside market and restaurant page.

Amanohashidate and the viewpoints

Amanohashidate is one of Japan’s three scenic views11, a sandbar about 3.6 km long lined with about 8,000 pine trees2.

Sandbar: about 3.6 km long2

What to see along it:

  • Amanohashidate-jinja Shrine and the Isoshimizu freshwater well2, on the sandbar itself
  • Chion-ji, the Buddhist temple at the southern end, and Kono Shrine11 near the northern end
  • a road bridge that swings 90 degrees2 to let ferries and barges through
  • Nariaiji Temple4, halfway up Mt. Nariai and looking over the sandbar

For the view from above, pick a hill:

Walking the sandbar takes over 50 minutes one way, while a rental bike does it in about 20 minutes6. The sightseeing boat shuttles back and forth4 if you’d rather go by water.

Prefer a guide? A local e-bike ride covers the sandbar and its shrines. To fit in the Ine fishing village too, a day trip from Osaka or Kyoto does both.

Amanohashidate is a pine-covered sand spit separating the Aso Sea from Miyazu Bay, near the town of Miyazu. Tour
