Local dishes

What to try: the food Amanohashidate is known for

Amanohashidate’s own dishes are seafood bowls and a small sweet rice cake sold by the temple gates. The official tourism site calls the Tango Peninsula around it a treasure trove of ingredients5.

Banbarako-don ¥1,5809

Clam rice bowl (asari-don)

An Amanohashidate speciality piled with clams harvested in Amanohashidate, seasoned simply with kelp and soy sauce6. Yoshinoya, in front of Kasamatsu Park’s Fuchu station, makes it with farmed clams in spring and wild clams the rest of the year7.

Banbarako-don

A bowl of 3–4 kinds of local fish from the day’s catch, marinated in a house-made sauce8. Hashidate Daimaru Honten serves it for ¥1,5809 (about US$10) (checked October 2026).

Chie no mochi

A bite-sized rice cake topped with mildly sweetened bean paste10. Four teahouses make it, all just outside the gates of Chion-ji Temple10. With no artificial preservatives10, it’s best eaten in the shop with green tea.

Miyazu curry yakisoba

A local Miyazu dish of yakisoba topped with curry roux11. Recipes range from soupy to dry11 from shop to shop. Hashidate Daimaru Honten’s version costs ¥9309 (about US$6).

Kurochikuwa (black chikuwa)

A Miyazu speciality: a fish-cake tube packed with the flavour of fish12.

Tango torigai

A Kyoto brand of cockle, larger and meatier than ordinary torigai, sweet with a firm bite13. They’re raised in containers hung from rafts in Maizuru, Miyazu and Kumihama bays13.

Seafood by season

Tango’s seafood follows the calendar, so what’s worth ordering shifts through the year.

The wider Tango coast is also known for:

  • Taiza crab and iwagaki (rock) oysters14
  • the Maizuru rock oyster rice bowl, piled high with large oysters cooked with egg14
  • Tango barazushi, made in every Tango household for festivals and special occasions14

Where to eat and drink

Eating places follow the sightseeing areas, so you can eat wherever your day takes you:

Chie no mochi ¥450 for three1

  • Amanohashidate Station and Monju: the chie no mochi teahouses outside Chion-ji Temple, cafes such as Cafe du pin and Joujou Coffee, and Japanese restaurants such as Mikamo and 310 Amanohashidate.
  • Fuchu and Ichinomiya (north end): Yoshinoya’s clam bowls, and Matsuya’s roasted Tamba chestnuts, found only there16. Up at the Kasamatsu Park viewpoint is the Ama Terrace Restaurant, with views of the Amanohashidate land bridge17.
  • Miyazu town centre: cafes, a burger place and most of the bars. For the town itself, see where to eat in Miyazu.
  • Ine (funaya bay): boathouse cafes such as Miyabi Ine Boathouse Cafe and Funaya Aura, plus Ine Restaurant Funaya. Ine’s harbours offer freshly caught yellowtail14. Pair lunch with the boat: check Ine Bay sightseeing boat prices.

Restaurant Pure at Auberge Amanohashidate is a casual restaurant facing the sandbar where every seat has an ocean view18. It serves the chef’s Western cuisine19, and its listing invites people to drop in18. Staying the night instead? Compare hotels near Amanohashidate.

Driving in? Chion-ji is about 10 minutes by car from Miyazu Amanohashidate IC20, and its teahouses are just outside the gates. If you’d rather not plan lunch at all, the Amanohashidate and Miyama day tour with boat and lunch builds a restaurant stop into the day.

Sake, wine and bars

Drinks and nightlife

For a drink you’ve got a handful of bars, a local winery and an old sake brewery in Ine. The bars on the map list:

Drinking age 2021

  • Seaside Bar, by Amanohashidate Station and Monju
  • SHOT BAR and public BAR Y-shi (an izakaya), in Miyazu town centre
  • Cafe & Bar Ukigumo, also in Miyazu town centre

Amanohashidate Winery

Amanohashidate Winery makes Tango wine from grapes grown and picked in its own vineyard22. Its shop sells its own wines, grape sweets and local farm produce23.

  • Workshop tour and wine shop: 10:00–17:0022
  • Vineyard Restaurant (upstairs): dishes made from local ingredients, opens 11:00, last order 14:0022

Mukai Sake Brewery in Ine

Mukai Sake Brewery is a small Ine brewery founded in 175425. Its Ine Mankai is an unusual red sake blended with ancient purple-black rice grown in Ine26, and it was served at the 2019 G20 Osaka Summit25.

The brewery suggests drinking it chilled, on the rocks, with soda or warmed26.

  • Elsewhere: stockists include 酒源はまの in Miyazu, 三田酒店 in Yosano and 北野商店 in Ine28

Before you order

Practical: paying, ATMs and dietary needs

Carry cash alongside your card: many places, especially in rural areas, may still accept only cash29.

No ATM inside Amanohashidate Station4

  • Cards: international credit, debit and prepaid cards are generally accepted throughout Japan30. Ask staff first, because stores may not display the card symbols30.
  • QR codes: JNTO lists PayPay, LinePay, Rpay (Rakuten Pay) and MerPay29. In Monju, Kanshichi Chaya accepts QR-code payments, including PayPay31.
  • IC cards: travel cards and phone apps work at many convenience stores, shops and vending machines29.
  • ATMs: you can withdraw cash at Japan Post Bank and Seven Bank ATMs30. Amanohashidate Ekimae Post Office is at 640-51 Monju, open 9:00–17:0032, though Miyazu City’s listing doesn’t mention an ATM.

Avoiding alcohol or eating halal

  • Cooking sake and mirin are used in many Japanese dishes3, and soy sauce and miso may contain alcohol33 too.
  • Some vinegars used in sushi rice are made from alcohol33.
  • Japan has no central agency for halal accreditation, and even halal-friendly restaurants may not cook in a separate halal-only kitchen3.
  • Tokyo’s official tourism guide advises asking the restaurant directly about its ingredients and seasonings33.

Sushi manners

  • Chopsticks are usual, but eating sushi with your hands is perfectly acceptable34.
  • Dip the topping, not the rice, into soy sauce34.
  • At conveyor-belt places, never put a plate back on the belt34.
