Quickest way in

The rail route from Osaka, step by step

The train is the quickest way in: JR to Fukuchiyama, then the Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate Station.

¥5,380 via Fukuchiyama5

  1. Board the Konotori in Osaka

Take the JR Konotori limited express towards Fukuchiyama Station.

  2. Change at Fukuchiyama Station

Switch to the Hashidate or Tango Relay limited express. Seat reservations are required on the Hashidate.

  3. Stay on through Miyazu

Amanohashidate Station is on a spur line, so the train stops at Miyazu and changes direction. Don't get off.

  4. Walk to the sandbar

The sandbar is about a 5-minute walk from Amanohashidate Station.

Wikivoyage puts the fare at ¥5,3805 (about US$34), while japan-guide.com gives ¥4,970–6,520 (about US$32–42) and about 2.5 hours2, depending on the train.

JNTO suggests another way: the bullet train from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto6, then the Hashidate Limited Express from Kyoto Station. The routes table below shows the Kyoto leg.

Does the Japan Rail Pass cover Amanohashidate?

No, not the whole way. The Japan Rail Pass doesn’t cover the Kyoto Tango Railway between Fukuchiyama and Amanohashidate8, so you pay the fare and fee for that section9 yourself. The railway’s limited express fee depends on the distance you ride10.

Other passes to know about:

  • Kansai WIDE Area Pass: JR West’s pass covers reserved seats on the Konotori, and JR West promotes it for excursions to Amanohashidate11. The price is in the table above.
  • Kansai Area Pass: JR West stopped selling it on 30 September 202612.

Entry to Japan

Arriving in Japan from abroad

Entry rules are set by Japan as a whole, not by Amanohashidate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Digital Agency and Japan Customs set them out:

90-day visa-free stay for most15

  • Visa-free stays: Japan has visa exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions15. Most visitors get 90 days; nationals of Indonesia and Thailand get 15 days, and those of Brunei and Qatar 30 days15.
  • ePassports: for several nationalities, including Thailand, Brazil, the UAE and Peru, the exemption applies only to ICAO-compliant ePassports15.
  • Visit Japan Web: the Digital Agency’s online service lets you do your arrival immigration and customs steps online16, and its 2D code replaces the paper documents17.
  • Customs: every passenger must submit a customs declaration, and the paper form is still accepted18.

At Kansai International Airport, arrivals immigration is run by the Kansai Airport District Immigration Office19. From there, follow the airport route above.

Road closures and weather warnings

Driving up, or taking the bus from Kyoto, in late October? Check the closures before you set out.

Night closures 26–30 October 202620

  • Detours: NEXCO points drivers to National Routes 9 and 27, and bad weather can postpone closures or change the sections20.
  • Kyoto-line buses: with closures scheduled until 6:00 on 31 October 2026, Tankai expects diverted buses to run about 30 minutes late, and they skip the Miyazu Amanohashidate IC stop21.
  • Trains: on 23 October 2026 the Kyoto Tango Railway warned that Typhoon No. 30 could delay or cancel trains from 24 to 26 October22.
  • On arrival: cars can’t drive on the sandbar23, so park and walk.

Miyazu’s wettest month is September, with 226.9 mm24 of rain on average. Read up on seasonal weather and travel timing for the month you plan to go.

Avoid these slip-ups

Tips and common mistakes

  • Missing the last bus back: the final return leaves Amanohashidate Station at 16:454. Too early for you? See where to stay and make a night of it.
  • Packing big for the bus: Tankai takes one piece of luggage per passenger, up to 10 kg and 1 m4 in total dimensions.
  • Skipping Ine: a funaya inn there says the local Tankai bus from Amanohashidate or Miyazu Station takes about an hour25. Read up on Ine’s boathouses first.
  • Not knowing where to start: head for Chionji Temple, at the southern entrance to the sandbar26. The Tango Peninsula sightseeing map shows the rest.
  • Arriving hungry: plan lunch around your bus or train times, and look up Amanohashidate food before you go.
