The summit park

What’s at the top of Mt. Monju

7 matanozoki platforms7

Amanohashidate View Land is a hilltop viewpoint on Mt. Monju4 (Monju-yama), looking across the bay at Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s three scenic views5. Google Maps files it as an amusement park6, so the view comes with rides.

What you’ll find up there:

  • Matanozoki: you bend over and look at the sandbar through your legs4. View Land has seven matanozoki platforms, all with handrails7.
  • Hiryukan Corridor: a raised walkway about 250 m long and up to about 8.5 m7 high.
  • Ferris wheel and cycle cars: Kyoto Prefecture’s tourism guide lists a Ferris wheel, a sky-rail with pedal-cars and a sky walk4 as family attractions.

The sandbar below is roughly 3.6 km long, with about 8,000 pine trees8 along it.

The ride up

Chairlift or monorail: how long the ride takes

Either way the ride is short: the chairlift takes about 6 minutes and the monorail about 7 minutes9. The difference is how often they go:

Monorail every 20 minutes9

  • Chairlift: you can board at any time9, with no wait for a departure.
  • Monorail: it leaves every 20 minutes, and pets aren’t allowed9 on board.

Travelling with a wheelchair or pushchair changes the choice; see the access section below.

View Land lends wheelchairs and has a step-free route through part of the park:

  • Wheelchairs can be borrowed9 on site.
  • The route from the Hiryukan Corridor entrance in the middle of the park to the viewing restaurant is barrier-free9.
