The view from Kasamatsu Park

Kasamatsu Park is a hilltop lookout 130 m above sea level1 in the Fuchu district, on the north side of Amanohashidate. It’s one of the two lookouts2 for viewing the sandbar, which spans Miyazu Bay and is one of the Three Views of Japan3.

From up here the pine-covered sandbar is said to look like a dragon rising to the sky1, which is why the view is called Shoryukan. Kyoto Prefecture’s tourism site calls the park the perfect stop for a first visit4 to Amanohashidate.

What to do at the top:

  • Sky Deck: a circular platform at the front of the viewing area1, with the closest view of the sandbar.
  • Mata-nozoki: the park is said to be the birthplace of mata-nozoki1, bending over to look at the view upside down through your legs.
  • AmaTerrace: the park’s restaurant, café and shop5 (hours below).

How do you get to Kasamatsu Park?

From Amanohashidate Station, take the bus or the sightseeing boat across to Fuchu, then ride the cable car or chairlift up the hill.

  1. Get to Amanohashidate Station

Express trains from Kyoto take about 2 hours to Amanohashidate Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway; the bus takes about 2 hours 20 minutes.

  2. Cross to Fuchu by bus

The bus from Amanohashidate Station to the Kasamatsu Cable stop takes 25 minutes.

  3. Or cross by sightseeing boat

The boat takes 12 minutes from Amanohashidate Sanbashi to Miya Sanbashi, then it's a 5-minute walk.

  4. Ride up from Fuchu Station

Board the cable car (about 4 minutes) or the chairlift (about 6–8 minutes) at Amanohashidate Cable Car Fuchu Station.

Cable car and chairlift hours

The operator gives the park’s hours as 9:00–18:001 (checked October 2026), varying by season. The cable car and the chairlift each keep their own seasonal timetable:

  • The cable car leaves at 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes past each hour6, with extra cars when it’s busy.
  • The ride takes about 4 minutes by cable car and about 6–8 minutes6 by chairlift.

Wheelchairs, pushchairs and pets

The cable car is the step-in option for wheelchairs and pushchairs, according to the ticket site Jorudan:

  • Wheelchairs: you can ride in your own chair, but the car’s entrance is only 680 mm10 wide, so chairs that width or wider are swapped for one the station provides.
  • Accessible toilets: at Fuchu Station and inside the Kasamatsu Park shop10.
  • Pushchairs: allowed on the cable car10.
  • Pets: only inside a pet case or pet cart with their face not showing6, on both the cable car and the lift.

Eating at AmaTerrace

AmaTerrace sits inside the park, with a view over the whole of the sandbar. It’s open 9:00–18:00, varying by season, with last orders at 16:00 in the café and 15:3011 in the restaurant. Kyoto by the Sea also lists a gift shop2 at the park.

Kasamatsu Park or View Land?

They’re the two lookouts over the same sandbar: Kasamatsu Park on the north side in Fuchu, and Amanohashidate View Land, an observatory on top of Mt. Monju12. Kasamatsu’s draws are the Shoryukan view, mata-nozoki and the mountain bus on to Nariaiji Temple.

Timing can decide it for you. View Land is closed for construction from 15 to 17 December 202613, and its operator sends visitors to Kasamatsu Park for the view instead. For the other side of the bay, read up on things to do at Amanohashidate Viewland.
