Is Monju worth visiting?

Yes, if you want to see the sandbar on foot: Monju puts a temple, a swing bridge, teahouses and a public bath in the streets around Amanohashidate Station. The villages at both ends of the sandbar are easy to walk around1, because distances are short.

The sandbar Monju opens onto is one of Japan’s three scenic views5, roughly 3.6 km6 of pines across Miyazu Bay. What’s waiting for you in the village:

  • Chion-ji (Monju-do): one of Japan’s three Monju temples, where exam candidates and their families come to pray for wisdom2. There’s more in the guide to the temple at the Amanohashidate sandbar.
  • Kaisenkyo swing bridge: a bridge that swings 90 degrees whenever a boat passes3, linking the sandbar with the Monju-do side.
  • Chie no Wa lantern: an unusually shaped lantern beside Chion-ji, said to have guided boats through the Monju channel in the Edo period7.
  • The chie no mochi teahouses: Chitose, Hikobe, Kanshichi and Yoshino8, all just outside Chion-ji’s gates.
  • Chie no Yu: the public bath beside the station (hours below).

Miyazu town is a separate area on the official map, around Miyazu Station9. If you’re heading there too, read more on Miyazu.

A walking route from Amanohashidate Station

The simplest Monju visit runs in a straight line: station, temple, bridge, sandbar, then a boat back.

  1. Start at Amanohashidate Station

The station is on the Kyoto Tango Railway; Chie no Yu, the public bath, is about a 1-minute walk away.

  2. Walk to Chion-ji

Chion-ji is 5 minutes on foot. Its main gate, the largest temple gate in the Tango region, faces the teahouse street.

  3. Cross the Kaisenkyo swing bridge

The bridge is about 5 minutes from the station and links the Monju-do side with the sandbar.

  4. Walk or cycle the sandbar

Crossing takes about 50 minutes on foot one-way, about 20 minutes by bicycle, past Amanohashidate-jinja Shrine and the Isoshimizu well.

  5. Take the boat back

The sightseeing boat links the Fuchu and Monju districts in 12 minutes.

Tankai’s bus fares are the ones in force from 1 October 202610, and the train fare depends on the day of travel11. For timetables and the station itself, see train times and fares at Amanohashidate Station.

Driving, Chion-ji is about 10 minutes2 from the Miyazu Amanohashidate IC, and the temple car park holds 100 cars and 10 buses12.

Chion-ji (Monju-do): hours and the hidden statue

Chion-ji’s grounds are always open for worship6. The main-hall counter for amulets is open 8:00–17:00 (checked October 2026), though the temple says its hours vary with the season and temple events12.

The temple’s own site says its tahoto pagoda is the only Muromachi-period tahoto pagoda in the Tango region13.

Chie no Yu public bath by the station

Chie no Yu is the only public bathhouse (sotoyu) in Miyazu City16, named after the wisdom of Chion-ji’s Monju Bosatsu. It’s open 12:00–21:0016 (checked October 2026), so it works as a soak before your train back.

What you pay in Monju

Wandering Monju itself costs nothing; you pay for the bath, a temple stamp or parking.

Who Monju suits

Monju suits walkers and train travellers: the sights sit close to the station, and you never need a car once you arrive. Families with exam-age children come for Chion-ji’s reputation for granting wisdom2.

If you need step-free access or are bringing a pushchair, check with the temple before you go.
